Weekend in Leicester

One of my best friends has just got a transfer through work from her Melbourne office to their office in Amsterdam! This means that after 4 years we finally got to catch up!

Lizzy decided to join me for a weekend up in Leicester to watch the BT Super Series Division 2 in the Wheelchair Rugby.

I hired a car through the website Ridelink and picked Lizzy up from Luton Airport after work on the Friday and after a quick stop for a sandwich from a services we arrived in Leicester around 10 – 10.30.

Lizzy is also a certified Coeliac, so I made as a booking at the Cosy Club for brunch the Saturday morning.  Their gluten free menu is super extensive and Liz was happy to get some proper tea (apparently the emphasis is more on coffee in the Netherlands).

Look how delicious this is!

4 years between catchups!

After brunch we explored the shopping centre a bit and did a bit of clothes shopping we made our way to Leicester Arena to watch some Rugby.

Wheelchair rugby is a bit different to League or Union – for one it is played indoors in specially made rugby chairs.  Each team has up to 12 players with 4 on court, with each player classified due to abilities out of 4 and the whole team adding to 8.

The game is made up of four 8 minute quarters, and the teams have 40 seconds for each ‘play’, with 12 seconds to get the ball across the half way line. All the rules can be found on the IWRF website.

We watched 2 or 3 games in the afternoon and then it was time for dinner. Leicester city centre is full of chain restaurants which meant that Lizzy and I could get our pizza fix at Pizza Express. I like them as their gluten free pizza bases are quite nice and they don’t charge a surcharge! We got the gluten free dough balls and different pizzas so we could share.

We finished the day off with a night cap in the hotel bar.

On the Sunday we hit the hotel restaurant for breakfast that headed back to the Arena to watch some more rugby. We left at lunch time as I had to show Liz the beauty of English shopping – Primark!

We also hit up 5 Guys for a delicious lettuce wrapped burger and some Cajun style fries.

I dropped Lizzy back off at Stansted Airport around 4 so she could make her flight back to Amsterdam and then went and dropped the hire car off.
